Hola! My name is Gabriela Barzallo. I am a bilingual journalist, and multimedia producer, born and raised in Ecuador, and based in New York City since 2014. I have a BS in Media, Culture & Communications from NYU.
I currently work at Democracy Now!, an independent global news program.
I have print/online, video, multimedia, and audio reporting experience.
I have produced enterprise stories and reported on a wide range of topics from human rights, feminism, gender based-violence, race & ethnicity, U.S. politics, to culture, and music, both in English and Spanish.
During the pandemic, I created my own narrative podcast about stories of resistance from across the world, and covered the NYC social movements and their fight for racial and climate justice.
I have a passion for telling underreported stories and giving a voice to traditionally underrepresented communities. I strive to use innovative platforms to create compelling stories, reach to new and diverse audiences, and enrich the overall storytelling experience.
Besides the United States, I have reported from Ecuador and Argentina for local and international media outlets, and I developed an independent multimedia project from the Brazilian favelas.
As a cultural manager, I have collaborated with institutions, and artists in the development, logistics and promotion of diverse projects. Before the pandemic began, I worked with the Latin American Writers Institute (LAWI), an organization devoted to promoting Latin American & Latino literature in the United States.
I am always looking forward to applying my multimedia, storytelling, bilingual and multicultural abilities, while making a positive impact in the world.
